Offstream is a UK directory of commentators. It lists where they publish and links to that material. This page says what data the site handles, why, and what you can do about it. Offstream is the controller of this data. Questions go to privacy@offstream.media.

No cookies, no accounts

The site sets no cookies. There are no accounts, logins, comment forms or mailing lists, and no advertising or tracking scripts.

What is stored in your browser

On phones, the site may offer to install itself as an app. To avoid asking too often, it keeps a visit count and a "dismissed" flag in your browser's local storage. Nothing is sent to Offstream, and nothing else is stored. This storage is needed for that feature, so the law does not require consent for it. To clear it, clear site data for offstream.media in your browser settings.

Hosting and server logs

The site is hosted by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel processes your IP address and request details to serve pages and keep the service secure, and it keeps short-lived server logs.

Visitor statistics

Offstream uses Vercel Web Analytics to count page views. It sets no cookies and does not identify you. Visits are grouped with a hash that changes every day, so a visit cannot be linked to you or to your visits on other days.

When you follow a link to a voice's channel, the site records a count of that click: the voice, the platform, the Offstream page, and the destination site. It stores no IP address, browser details or identifier, so the count cannot be linked to you.

Images from other sites

Video thumbnails load from YouTube (i.ytimg.com), and book covers load from Open Library (covers.openlibrary.org). Your browser fetches these images directly, so those services receive your IP address and browser details under their own privacy policies. Links to YouTube, Spotify, Substack and other platforms are plain links. Nothing from those platforms is embedded on the page.

Voice profiles

Each voice profile holds a name, a short bio, credentials and links to the channels where that person publishes, along with the titles and dates of their public pieces. This comes from material they have published themselves and from other public sources. The legal basis is legitimate interest: helping readers find where public commentators publish. Offstream links to the material and does not host it.

If you are listed and want your profile corrected or removed, or you object to being listed, follow the steps on the takedown page.

Requests are reviewed rather than granted automatically.

Emails you send

If you email takedown@offstream.media or privacy@offstream.media, Offstream receives your address and message through Resend, its email provider. They are used only to deal with your request and are deleted 12 months after the request is closed.

Service providers

  • Vercel: hosting and visitor statistics
  • Supabase: the database that holds the directory and click counts
  • Resend: email

These providers process data only on Offstream's instructions. Some of them may process data outside the UK. Where they do, they use the safeguards UK law requires, such as standard contractual clauses.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR and EU GDPR you can ask to see, correct or delete personal data about you, object to its use, or ask for its use to be restricted. Email privacy@offstream.media. You will get a reply within one month.

You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, or to the data protection authority in your country.
