Biography

Ian Proud is a former British diplomat who spent 24 years in HM Diplomatic Service. From 2014 to 2019 he served as Economic Counsellor at the British Embassy in Moscow — the years spanning the annexation of Crimea, the imposition of Western sanctions and the steep decline in UK–Russia relations. He is the author of A Misfit in Moscow, a memoir-cum-critique of British diplomacy toward Russia in that period.

Writing and broadcasting as The Peacemonger, Proud offers realist commentary on Russia, diplomacy, sanctions and the war in Ukraine. His distinctive contribution is institutional and first-hand: he analyses the diplomatic failures he observed from inside the British mission, and is openly critical of the service in which he served.

His work appears on his own Substack and YouTube channel, and he also co-hosts a collaborative current-affairs programme with other British commentators.
